Adjustable beds have one distinct advantage compared to normal beds and that is the angle of inclination for the head and/or foot can be adjusted such that a person can sleep many positions on the mattress other than always being horizontal. Small motors are used in electric adjustable beds to drive gears and move portions of the bed lower or higher, in order to bring comfort to the person sleeping. Some electric beds comes with remote controls to allow bed adjustments while remaining in bed, which is very useful for patients in hospitals (almost all beds are adjustable) or persons recuperating at home. There are some cheaper adjustable beds with only a manual crank handle to rotate and change the bed’s sleeping angle. Adjustable mattresses can be a suitable long term solution for people with a variety of chronic health conditions such as poor circulation, mobility difficulties, muscular problems, arthritis etc. These patients face problems getting good restorative sleep on memory foam orthopedic mattresses because they cannot provide specific pressure points support for their bodies.
Nowadays, many patients choose to recuperate in their own houses and thus adjustable beds can also be found outside of hospitals. Remote controlled adjustable beds are now high end luxury items made by top bedding manufacturers and their flagship smart mattresses often come with very sophisticated multi air chambers to further relieve and support the body from various stress and pain which improves the quality of living. Besides changing the angle of the bed, they can also finely control the firmness bed support and air pressure at different portions of the bed for a truly “sleeping on air” experience. Some luxury adjustable beds also come with built in massaging and heater units that can be remotely controlled.
Do not think that these are lonely mattresses only meant for single patients. There are also adjustable beds that come in double, queen or king size beds. A split queen size bed and mattress have separate moveable parts to allow a couple to select different sleeping angles while lying on the same bed.
Adjustable beds and mattresses are useful for people that require a more comfortable sleep that cannot be offered adequately by normal mattresses. Just a small change in sleeping angle can mean alot to people with circulatory problems and other bone and joint ailments. Furthermore, they often face the need to change the sleeping angle multiple times in the night in order to ease their discomfort and stress areas. A remote controlled adjustable mattress comes in handy here whereby they can operate the bed right in bed and there is no need to disturb other family members for assistance.
Adjustable beds can be used with most softer mattresses or firmer mattresses as long as they can be bent without causing internal damage. Most spring coil mattresses are not suitable because they are meant to be laid flat or the contained spring pockets may end up meshing against each other. If you need to sleep on a spring mattress, there are some specially designed pocket springs that can be laid onto of adjustable beds.
If you intend to buy an adjustable bed for your aging parents or yourself, take more time to look at the different models available and decide what kind of features are necessary and most important for your needs. These are not exactly discount mattresses and if you do not need a model with all features combined, you can save quite a lot and spend the money on an extended on-site warranty especially if you are buying an electric adjustable one that comes with remote control.
